I don't think it does need a background, not really. Normally I would agree but not on this piece, the lack of background makes it more mysterious and adds to the atmospheric quality of the work. It makes the viewer use their own imaginations to place the character and the man becomes more of a universal symbol. Also your tonal range is already well done it looks very smooth (nice transitions). I think adding a background would significantly take away from the subject and mood.
I can see where you're coming from...but, I just feel that I gravitate towards this style because 1. I am too lazy to do backgrounds or 2. I am not good enough to do backgrounds. Either one of these is...not good. So even though it might be better for the piece not to have a background, I still feel obligated to add one in just so I get the practice.
