The idea came from a girl in one of my classes, who said that everyone is alone, and we're all trying to find some way to connect. So I started thinking about a person who finds it hard to open up; he'd have to give something up about himself to "get off the island," so to speak. Which led to the idea of an isolated island, with a means for existence (food from the tree) but little else. It's enough to keep him alive, but there could be so much more he's missing out on...or is he? He can only find out by changing the tree into something he can travel in. In this case, a boat. But the moment he finishes the boat, he's scared. So he sits on the trunk of the tree he's cut down, and contemplates his actions, and kind of thinks over his decision when it's already too late. Hahahaha. That was one loooong explanation.
Thanks for taking the time to explain! I like this even more now! Must of been a cool girl, i guess i agree with her, we are all alone. P.S.- Sorry I'll try and post some work soon i feel bad your the only one posting
I'm not sure I agree with her. There are some people who understand each other as if they are one (or so they make that impression). I guess that's the most idealistic way of seeing the world, that someone out there knows what you're going through, and wants to help you out; you're not just stuck by yourself on some emotional island. But if we never find the connections, do they really exist? So I'm unsure, as I probably will remain so. Anyways, on a somewhat lighter and humorous note, she was cool, but a bit weird... And please, by all means post! :-)
I see your point, but i still disagree. I think that no one even comes close to understanding themselves much less anyone around them even if they have a strong connection. Although i suppose it is possible if someone with an outside perspective can see someone clearer than they see themselves, but then who has the true perspective, the person looking in or the one looking out? I think people are too complex to ever fully understand all the corners of themselves or much less others. Being a idealist I would like to believe in the kind of connection your talking about, but I'm not sure I could ever make myself believe it exists without experiencing it and I certainly never have sadly. But I guess that's selfish of me just because I can't feel it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Wow I'm just writing a giant contradiction, sorry. :) haha just ignore this comment.
No, I don't mind giant contradictions. You do make some good points, and it makes me feel good that something I draw can bring up a discussion with opposing views.

I really like this piece! The coloring is very subtle and smooth, and i like the question! What made you think this up?
